Los Angeles Chargers at New Orleans Saints NFL Betting Preview

The most intriguing part of the Los Angeles Chargers (1-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-2) matchup scheduled for Monday night is where the game will be played. With Hurricane Delta threatening the Gulf of Mexico and scheduled for landfall in Louisiana on Friday, this game could move to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

For now, the game is scheduled at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans with an 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN.

These teams don’t have much history on the field, with just 12 meetings over 37 seasons. The Chargers lead the series 7-5 but have lost three in a row. Their last win was when then-Chargers quarterback Drew Brees threw four touchdown passes to lead San Diego to a win over New Orleans in 2004. The Chargers’ last win in New Orleans came in 1997.

Los Angeles Chargers Betting Outlook: Help Herbert

The Chargers lost but covered in Tampa Bay Sunday and are 3-1 against the spread, with the under 3-1 in their four games. Los Angeles ranks sixth in the NFL in total yards (400.3 yards per game) and seventh in passing yards (275 yards per game) but just 27th in scoring (20.8 points per game).

The defense has been good against the run (110.8 yards per game) but allows the sixth-most passing yards (263.0 yards per game) in the NFL.

First-round pick Justin Herbert is getting more comfortable under center, and Sunday against Tampa Bay, he was 20-for-25 for 290 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He has yet to get a win while completing 72% of his passes in three games for 931 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Chargers suffered a blow as running back Austin Ekeler was sidelined with a leg injury against the Bucs that will keep him out for a few weeks. With Ekeler out, Herbert led the team with 14 rushing yards, while running backs Justin Jackson and Joshua Kelley combined for 16 yards on 15 carries. Kelley has 174 yards on the season with one touchdown on 52 carries.

Wide receiver Keenan Allen caught eight passes for 62 yards while Tyron Johnson, Jalen Guyton and Donald Parham each caught a touchdown pass. Allen leads the team with 32 receptions for 327 yards and one touchdown on the season, while tight end Hunter Henry has 18 catches for 245 yards.

New Orleans Saints Betting Outlook: Get Healthy

The Saints are 2-2 ATS after covering in Detroit on Sunday, and the over is 4-0 in their games. The Saints are sixth in scoring in the NFL with 30.8 points per game, but they are in the middle of the pack in rushing yards (120.0 yards per game), passing yards (251.0 yards per game) and total yards (371 yards per game).

The defense has outplayed the offense so far, ranking sixth in yards allowed (334.3 yards per game) and seventh in rushing yards allowed (97.5 yards per game) but 25th in points allowed (30.8 points per game).

Brees threw for 246 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in Detroit last week. On the season, he is completing 71% of his passes for 1,006 yards while throwing eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

Running back Alvin Kamara ran for 83 yards on 19 carries with one score, while Latavius Murray scored twice while rushing for 64 yards on 14 carries. Kamara has 236 rushing yards, 321 receiving yards and seven total touchdowns on the season.

Wide receiver Michael Thomas (ankle) missed his third straight game, while tight end Jared Cook (groin) was also out with an injury. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders caught six passes for 93 yards, while tight end Tre’Quan Smith had both touchdowns to go with his 54 yards. Thomas is questionable for Monday but may not return until after the Week 6 bye.

Los Angeles Chargers at New Orleans Saints Betting Lines By Payperhead247

● Chargers Spread: +8 (-110); Chargers moneyline: +280
● Saints Spread: -8 (-110); Saints moneyline: -360
● Total Points: 51.0 (over -110, under -110)

The Chargers have a challenge without Ekeler, but the passing game is able to make up for shortcomings in the running game, especially since the Saints have a stout run defense. This game has so many variables with injury concerns on both sides and the location up in the air.

With that said, take the points for the Chargers to keep it close, the Saints have yet to blow out anyone in 2020.
